Experience
I have been involved in education for the past 18 years in a variety of ways. Initially, I was an adult literacy instructor for Newport News Public Schools helping Newport News Shipbuilding employees learn to read. From there, I taught preschool in Hampton. Next, I taught Adult Basic Education with Norfolk Public Schools Adult Education Department. While with Norfolk Public Schools, I moved on to teaching sixth grade reading and seventh grade social studies at Lake Taylor Middle School. My next step was outside of the classroom; I served at-risk youth as an Intensive In-Home Counselor with Family Redirection Institute in Newport News. While there, I advanced from counselor to supervisor. Even though I was not in the classroom, I continued to educate youth and their families in the mental health arena. Most recently, I have been an instructor for the ISAEP program with Newport News Public Schools. ISAEP (Individual Student Alternative Education Plan) is a federal educational program designed for 16 - 18 year old high school students to prepare them to successfully complete the GED. Within this program, I taught math, science, and social studies. My varying educational experiences have taught me that students learn differently and have different educational goals. I develop good rapport and an effective working relationship with my students to assist them with achieving their goals. I do this by being attentive, patient, and compassionate with my students. I make every effort to learn about their needs and meet them where they are. My motto is I help others to help themselves. Tutoring will allow me to assist students on a one on one basis to achieve their individual goals and go farther.
